Today's Tip: Get your current campers to bring in new ones.

Your current campers and families are your best salespeople, and word of mouth will always be your best form of advertising. With the popularity of Twitter and Facebook, the concept of word of mouth has changed over the past few years. Clearly, the way that today's youth communicates with one another has been transformed for good (and bad).

This poses both challenges and great opportunities. Getting your campers to help promote you via facebook and twitter will prove to be difficult, unless you answer the question of "What's In It For Me?"

Offering prizes and incentives to the people who post pictures, leave comments, and spread a positive vibe about your camp via Social Media will definitely help your cause. Once one camper finds out that another camper received a free tee shirt (because they just posted about it on facebook), then you are much more likely to have others follow suit.

We'll make sure that your camp can get a piece of that action! How? Through our Social Media Consultation, you will learn the best practices for offering incentives and promotions. We also have an excellent design team to make the marketing materials to help you promote your prize give-a-ways.

7 Stats About Facebook That Can't Be Ignored

1) More than 800,000 local businesses have active Pages on Facebook.

While having a Facebook page does not replace the need for an actual website, they certainly work well in conjunction with one another. We use special techniques throughout the creation of a Facebook page to make sure that most content links back to your website. We also make sure that every website we design and manage has links that go directly to your Facebook page. Our Social Media Marketing techniques have one main purpose: to increase your visibility on the web!

2) There are more than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, etc.) shared each month on Facebook.

Keeping up with the addition of relevant and timely content on your camp's Facebook page can be quite overwhelming. That's why we have full time staff to manage everything for you, and make sure that your fans have a reason to come back and visit. Again, most content is linked back to your website to create more visibility.

3) More than 45 million Facebook users update their status each day.

What are you doing to have them comment about your business or brand on their pages? We encourage interactivity with your fans and get them to engage with your Facebook page. We don't just wait for your fans to find you, as we actively seek out groups that fit your target market.

4) Facebook claims that 50% of active users log into the site each day. This would mean at least 250 million users every 24 hours!

Since the first thing that Facebook users see when they log in are the updates from the people and brands they are following, make sure that you consistently have something important to share with them on a regular basis. We can create that content for you, and make sure that it gets implemented regularly.

5) There are more than 200 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.

They also happen to be twice as active on Facebook as someone who accesses it via desktop or laptop. What happens to those users when they try to access your website after they read something interesting about your camp on Facebook? Will the site crash on their phones due to flash content? Will the site download quickly, or take too long and have the user give up? Can the user fill out any forms to get more information? Can they watch your videos on their phones? Unless you have a designer deal specifically with these issues that arise from mobile web browsing, your website will fail when people try to access it via their mobile devices. Our Mobile Website Design pros can address all of these issues while maintaining the look and feel of your original website.

6) Every month, more than 250 million people engage with Facebook on external websites.

See # 1 and 5 above. Make sure that all or most of the content on your Facebook page is linked back to your website. Also, make sure that those 200 million mobile device users will be catered to on your website as well. It is very clear that while Facebook is not the end all - be all of your marketing mix, it should be at least 10% of your marketing budget.

7) People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook.

We'll make sure that your camp can get a piece of that action! How? By creating/joining groups, adding relevant content, purchasing Facebook Ads, linking your Facebook and Webpage... I can't give away all of our tricks right now, but feel free to call us to find out more information.

The Hot New Trend in Mobile Marketing for Camps - Instagram

Keeping up with the way that your campers and families are interacting online has been a consistent challenge since the rise of social media. Figuring out what is effective, and what is a waste of time requires trial and error, as well as practice. One of the newest ways to market your Camp using pictures is Instagram, a very popular medium that is both a photo-sharing and a social media app.

With 100 million users on Instagram, it can be a very powerful way to reach potential campers and to connect with your current families. How Instagram works, is that a user takes a picture with a smart phone, applies various filters to give the desired look to the photo, and then posts the photo onto Instagram. These pictures can then be posted on other social media sites such as Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare. As with Facebook and Twitter, users can follow and “like” your photos.

How is Instagram different than Pinterest, you may ask? Pinterest is a place to post pictures and images that you find really interesting and inspiring. Instagram is a place to post photos that are not quite glossy and pretty, but tell a story. Pinterest is similar to the way that you display pictures on your wall at home, while Instagram is the photo album.

Instagram allows you to target mobile users with a social media marketing campaign based on photo sharing. This can be done through a photo contest, telling a story about your Camp through photos, or marketing an upcoming event through photos. Instagram allows you not only to talk about your Camp, but also allows you to humanize your Camp by showcasing pictures of your facilities, campers, events, employees, etc. To be successful on Instagram as a business, you can’t just sell your product – you must find a way to relate with people. For the potential camper, Instagram can be used to show that family why they should take a closer look at your facility. Find something about your Camp that will connect with your customers and use photos to solidify that connection. That way, your families will have a true interest in what you are all about.

Now is the time to expand your Camp's social media marketing! Contact us at The Camp Marketing Pros to discuss your current marketing campaigns, and how we can help to broaden your camp’s potential. We specialize in web design, SEO for your website, app design, social media marketing, and DVD Duplication. Give us a call at 914.788.1555 or visit http://www.campmarketingpros.com.

Website Design Tips for Camps

When designing a new website for camps, there are many factors that must be considered before even going into the programming stages. Failure to plan ahead for the future will most likely make your new website dated before it even goes live. Before even considering the look and feel of your new web design, ask yourself these questions:

1. Do I want the site to be mobile ready?
2. How often do I plan on adding new blogs?
3. How often do I plan on adding new pictures?
4. Do I want to be able to make changes to the site myself?
5. How easy will it be to add new Social Media links to my new site?
6. What do my camper families want to see on the website?
7. What will set my camp's website apart from the competition?

In order to accommodate parents that are on the go, making sure that your website has a mobile version is very important. To decide if this is the right direction for your camp, take a look at your website with your smartphone, and see how it looks. Next, take a look at your stats in the cpanel and see how many people are trying to view your current site on a mobile device. If 20+ people are looking at your site on a mobile device every month, and it is impossible to read the content without zooming in and out, then you should consider a new design that works on smartphones and tablets.

A stale website that has not been updated on a regular basis will not only look outdated, but it will be ignored by Google and Yahoo. Fortunately, you no longer need to be an HTML programming expert to properly administer your website. With better programming and templates available for Joomla, Wordpress, and other open source programs, website design has become a lot more cost effective and user-friendly. With these programs, adding blogs, content, pictures, links, and social media feeds is as easy as copy, point, click, and paste.

Talk with your families, and find out what features they would like to see on your website to make life easier for them. Find out what they like and dislike about your current site, and how they think it could be improved. Get creative with ways to keep in touch, provide information, and promote your brand. We are always here to brainstorm and offer our two cents.

Search Engine Optimization Tips for Camps

Your camp can have the flashiest, and most fancy looking site on the planet, but it will not do you a whole lot of good without getting visitors. What may look visually appealing to humans, looks quite unattractive to search engines that are looking for sites that load quickly and have lots of content in the form of wording. Here are some questions to ask when preparing to optimize your website for Google and Yahoo:

1. What page does my site land on for important keywords and phrases?
2. Does my website contain flash?
3. Are there back links on my website?
4. Is the content written property?
5. Are the pictures being used properly?
6. Are the videos on youtube being used properly?
7. When was the last time I added new content?
8. Are my blogs up-to-date?

If your answer to any of these questions is "I don't know," then call us today for a free consultation. Within minutes of looking at your site, our programmers will be able to provide a full analysis of your strengths and weaknesses. The real question is, can you afford not to know the answers to the above questions?

Typically, it takes anywhere from 3-6 months before you will start to reap the rewards of doing your search engine optimization. This means that if you start now, your page rankings should be much improved by the time most parents are actively searching for a camp to send their kids to.

How to deal with Facebook's Pay to Promote Your Post Policy

The chances are, you have probably read in the past week about how many small to mid-sized businesses are outraged with Facebook’s new revenue producing scheme called Pay to Promote. Since going public, Facebook has faced a lot of scrutiny over how effective it is as a marketing tool, as well as how financially viable it is as a business. Most, if not all camps would fall under the small to mid-size business category, which is hit hardest by the new pay to promote your post policy.

According to Facebook, about 15% of your followers will have your posts added to their newsfeed. These are primarily the followers that frequently visit your page, make comments, and add posts of their own. If you wish to reach your less active followers, it is now time to start digging through the piggy bank.

For larger businesses, setting aside a budget of $10-20,000/year to ensure that a majority of their followers are receiving their posts in the news feeds is a mere drop in the well. However, if you are a smaller business that has built your social media marketing plan primarily around Facebook because it was free, then you are in a bind.

Fortunately, there are a few ways to get around this problem:

  1. Facebook is not the only game in town. It may be time to start putting more energy towards Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. For now, promoting through these sites is still FREE.
  2. Develop your own Social Media Platform that you have control of. This can be done in the form of a blog, or through your own APP.

If you are not quite ready to give up on the time and energy that you have already invested into Facebook, then it will be very important that you increase your fan interaction. The key is to inform your followers of how to deal with the ever-changing policies at Facebook. Here are some simple steps to provide your fans with:

1. Go to any page you've 'liked' in the past
2. Hover the mouse over the "Liked" button.
3. When a drop down menu appears, confirm "Show in News Feed" is selected.
4. Share this post with your friends! Help spread the word!

If you are finding all of this to be too overwhelming, or too much of an investment of time, then it is time to speak with a consultant that knows social media and mobile marketing for summer camps. Choosing wisely on how you spend your marketing and advertising dollars can be the difference between filling your camp next summer, or falling short of your goals.

Pinterest Marketing for Camps by the Numbers

  • 80% of the users are Women
  • 50% of the users have Kids
  • 41% of the users are between the ages of 34-55
  • 400% Growth Every Month
  • 10.4 Million users
  • Most users are located in the Midwest
  • Ranked #3 for Social Media Sites with 104 million hits/week
  • Hobbies and Leisure is the 3rd most popular topic on the site

As more businesses are adding Pinterest to their existing social media marketing mix, the data is starting to add up and we are getting a better understanding of how the site can work for different types of businesses. Brand exposure, link building, and link sharing are some of the key benefits to creating a Pinterest account. The first three statistics should jump out at camp owners and directors, as these are some prime demographic traits of who you should be marketing to.

Despite the numbers, questions remain within the industry as to whether or not this the right place for camps to spend some of their time and marketing budget. Pinterest seems to work best in a retail setting, but with a little creativity and ingenuity, camps can make use of this online scrapbook to build links and brand recognition. While there is no shortage of places to add content on the web, placing that content in a location where your target demographics spend time should be a top priority.

For now, one of the main differences between Pinterest and Facebook/Twitter, is that it is less of a popularity contest in terms of whose content is the most viewable. Every piece of content has equal availability to be viewed by the same amount of users, regardless of how many followers and re-pins you have. This stands out in stark contrast to Facebook’s Edge Ranking, which varies the availability to view a company’s post based off of how many followers they have.

We offer social media marketing for camps that won't break the budget. Visit http://www.campmarketingpros.com or call 914.788.1555.

Are You Making Use of QR Codes? And Why You Should Be!

QRCode

I'm sure you've seen these strange looking barcodes all over store windows, at the register, on product packaging, and even on menus. But, have you ever scanned one? And, better yet, does your camp have a mobile marketing strategy?

QR Codes have a tremendous upside! QR Codes are far more powerful than the typical barcode, as they can contain practically anything. You can link them to your Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Website, Coupons, Pictures...see where I'm going with this. The possibilities are practically endless!

Once you have this QR Code, you can place it...anywhere! You can send it in an email, print it on flyers, packaging, pamphlets, and you instantly give direct access to tons of information! QR Codes are also quickly replacing the good old 'free coffee' punch cards. Not only can you share info with a QR Code, but you can also track info. You can set up promotions such as, "Check in here 3 more times and receive...". You are able to create a direct interaction with your customers, or potential customers!

Just imagine all the great marketing potential embedded in a tiny little barcode! If you're having trouble seeing the possibilities, that's where we come in! We have endless ideas of how you can utilize technology to help your marketing campaigns. Get in touch with us today to help grow your social media and mobile marketing campaings! Email info[at]campdvds[dot]com or call us at 914-788-1555.

Text Message Marketing for Camps

The Text Message recently turned 20 years old, which gives many of us yet another reason to feel old! :) While some people have moved on from using texting as their primary form of communication, like Facebook, it is going to be around for years to come. Texting has stood the test of time due to it's convenience, and availability on almost all cell phones. It also provides a more secure network than social media for important messages that are not intended for the masses

The main benefit to sending out text messages for important notices to your camp families is that they still have a very high chance of being seen. If you rely mostly on Facebook and Twitter to get your message out, then you are giving up quite a bit of control over who (and who doesn't) see your message. Email has stood the test of time as well, but offers it's own limitations in terms of viewership.

After 20 years, some argue that the text message has not evolved enough to keep up with the standards of today's communication. Services like iMessage, BBM, WhatsApp, Skype, and iChat have provided consumers with easy alternatives and in some cases more features. However, if your camp has considered using text messaging to stay in touch, it is now more affordable that ever with the availability of rented short codes.

For more information about text messaging for your camp, email info[at]campdvds[dot]com or call us at 914-788-1555.

Camp Marketing Tips for 2013

Regardless of your budget, marketing to new families is an ongoing process for all camps. We thought we'd take a minute to focus on some creative camp marketing ideas to help improve your marketing campaigns.

Make it your priority to collect email addresses.

  • Make sure you include a space for email address on all forms being sent to parents (registration forms, permission slips, surveys).
  • Also, make sure to include a space to update an email address
  • Entice parents to sign up by offering special perks, such as emailed group photos from camp, or special contests!
  • Once you have these email addresses, be sure to use them! Send out quarterly or monthly newsletters with updates, event announcements, and other informative content.

Work with local school systems.
When kids aren't at summer camp, you can find them in school!

  • Discuss the possibility of distributing flyers and brochures in the local schools.
  • Offer schools the option to host their field days, or other recreational field trips at your camp facility! You'll then have the opportunity to collect email addresses on waiver forms, and introduce kids to your camp! They'll go home and tell their parents how great it was!!!
  • Open the communication with local schools and after school programs, you never know what opportunities may arise!

Off-Season
Think outside the box. What else can your facilities be used for?

  • How about hosting birthday parties at camp. This can not only help generate revenue in the off season, but also introduce new kids and families to your facilities! Another great way to collect those email addresses!
  • Get creative, you can open the facilities up for family reunions, picnics, special family fun days, holiday specific events...the possibilities are endless!

Camp Website

  • Make sure your website is clean, and easy to navigate.
  • Smartphone use is on the rise, make sure your website is mobile ready!
  • Make sure to stay up to date! Get on top of adding next years info as soon as the current camp season comes to an end.
  • Create the opportunity to register for camp, and request info online!
  • Include additional interactive content that entices people to use your site. Use blogs to post fun facts, activity ideas, recipe ideas, etc. Create contests, puzzles, camp coloring book pages, photo galleries, surveys, or even camper of the week spotlights!
  • Make sure to integrate Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest)
  • Make sure your website is optimized for search engines to ensure it is showing up on Google, Yahoo, and Bing!

You may get done reading this blog and think, "that sounds like a lot of work"...and it is! But, if you made it through this blog post, it means you care about the success of your camp, and at Camp Marketing Pros we do too! With over 15 years experience working with camps, we know what works and what doesn't work! Today’s Camp Marketing Tip: Celebrate the Personal Achievements of Your Staff Members on Social Media

Let’s face it. It is not an easy task to come up with captivating content for your social media posts on a regular basis. Since the idea behind utilizing social media as a marketing tool is to connect with your fans on a more personal level, then it might be time to start making those posts more personal if you are not already doing so.

Celebrating the personal achievements of your staff members shows that you care about the people around you. Caring about people shows that you can do a great job giving children the best experiences of their lives. From the parent's perspective, a big part of the summer camp experience is about peace of mind that their children will be in very good hands.

Have a 15 minute staff meeting in the beginning of the week to talk about any graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, or any other events/achievements that the staff members are excited or proud of. You will most likely be able to get 5-10 good post ideas from this quick conversation, and it brings the staff together at the same time.

Let’s face it. It is not an easy task to come up with captivating content for your social media posts on a regular basis. Since the idea behind utilizing social media as a marketing tool is to connect with your fans on a more personal level, then it might be time to start making those posts more personal.

Celebrating the personal achievements of your staff members shows that you care about people in general. Caring about people shows that you can do a great job giving children the best experiences of their lives. A big part of the summer camp experience is about peace of mind for the parents that their children will be in very good hands.

Have a 15 minute staff meeting in the beginning of the week to talk about any graduations, anniversaries, birthdays, or any other events/achievements that the members are excited or proud of. You will most likely be able to get 5-10 good post ideas from this quick conversation, and it brings the staff together at the same time.

Today’s Camp Marketing Tip: Increase Your Social Media and Blog Traffic with Invitations and RSVP’s to Open Houses and Reunions.

Now is the time of year when camp reunions become the next big event to plan for during the slow season. Of course the concept of “slow season” for camp directors is really just a myth, since this is the most important time of year to make sure that the bunks are filled for the upcoming summer.

While traditional snail mail invitations for open houses and reunions are certainly traditional, they don’t serve any other purpose than to draw attention to the event. These days, every action needs to serve a dual purpose in order to be a justifiable use of our precious time. Why not use this opportunity to set up an event post on Facebook, which links to more information and the ability to RSVP on your Blog in the comments section?

Of course, you can still send out your invitations via traditional methods such as email and USPS, but the call to action must be web-based and offer interaction. Once the event is over, continue to use the momentum of the previous interactions to drive web traffic to the pictures and videos that were shot.

Profesional Video Production Tips for Camps

Tips for Producing a Great Promo Video and Marketing with it:

There have been several game changers in the ways that a camp can market itself over the past decade, with YouTube being one of the biggest. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a video tells the whole story! While producing a video is not rocket science, most camp directors learn the hard way that it is not any easy task if you do not have the right team assembled.

1. Less is more, so keep the video length under 10 minutes. Average human attention spans have declined from 12 seconds to 8 seconds over the last decade, making the attention span of a Goldfish longer at 9 seconds. Keep this sad (but true) statistic in mind when deciding whether to add more, or take some shots out.

2. Use a GoPro or other Waterproof HD Camera to catch all of the action in a first person point of view. Point Of View shots really help the viewer feel like they are part of the action!

3. Use different filters and transitional effects to make the video more interesting. A video with lots of energy will really grab the viewers' attention and keep them engaged for the full 5-10 minutes.

4. Hire a professional videographer and get it done right the first time! Once the summer has past, you will not have the chance to film it again if the quality of the video is not where it needs to be.

5. The Editing will make or break the video, so be sure that your editor knows what they are doing!

6. Create a custom Youtube page with the look and feel of your website. Make sure that each description has links to your site and provides the right keywords and phrases for you camp.

7. Embed the promo video on your homepage! This will be one of your biggest selling tools, so make it easy for people to find it.

Rescue Your Camp's Google Ratings!

In April of this year Google enforced a new policy that pushed non mobile friendly websites out of their rankings system.  As google users and internet users in general are more and more on mobile devices such as tablets and phones, Google knew that it's search ranking system would have to be adjusted to meet the expectations of this growing market.  By the way, there is no signs of anything but continued growth in the ratio of mobile device searches to standard computer searches.  Besides the idea of losing your google ranking, any business owner should be concerned their business is being overlooked in general if their website can not be accessed by a smart phone.  A buyer and mobile device user out on the go, is not going to find a library or head back home to look up a business if they are carrying a internet accessible device in their pocket.

It is always a problem if your business is over looked.  Your business does not have a chance to survive and grow if know one can find it or when they run a search they find your competition first.  Here is a link to an article by Greg Sterling outlining the "#MobileGeddon" non-mobile website google rankings drop.
